Zagreb, the capital of Croatia (in former Yugoslavia), is home to rich, dramatic Jewish history. The growing local community still holds traditions and documentation that trace their ancestry all the way to churban bayis sheini, the destruction of the Second Temple!

As far as nearly 1,700 years back, in the times of the very first amoraim, there is mention of a shul in the vicinity. Approximately 400 years ago, another beautiful shul was built in Salona, but later fell to ruins and was marginally reclaimed into a local ruler’s estate.

From 300 Jews living in Zagreb in the 1950s, a flourishing community recently emerged. This led Rabbi Zaklas to contact Mikva Tahara and request our assistance in building a proper mikva, which will help bring hundreds of Jews closer to tahara and yiddishkeit.

30+ families have already signed a petition promising to uphold the laws of family purity and to use this new mikva religiously in accordance with halacha.
